Srinagar, Mar 13 (KNO): Jammu and Kashmir government on Wednesday said that the Jhelum and Tawi Flood Recovery Project has been extended upto 3l't August 2026 while a river morphology and feasibility study is underway for comprehensive flood mitigation of Jhelum. Replying to the question of MLA Justice Hasnain Masoodi, Jal Shakti Minister as per the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), said there is no flood threat to Pampore town in case of low and moderate magnitude floods. However, in situations like in 100 year floods as witnessed in 2014, overtopping of barks may result in inundation of certain low lying areas of Pampore. Therefore, the risk is only for high magnitude floods. “Various flood protection works have been executed on the embankments of river Jhelum in Pampore Town in order to save the life and property of the inhabitants. Recently, a flood protection work under FMP Phase-11 (Part A) has been completed on right side of river Jhelum at Khankahbagh and one more work at Zoonipora is under execution against the following contracts which are expected to be completed during the next financial year Further, in respect of Latribal to Frestalbol there is no requirement of the strengthening of the embankments, as they are stable,” the Minister said. “The Jhelum and Tawi Flood Recovery Project has been extended upto 31st August 2026,” he said. "A river morphology and feasibility study has been undertaken under the project for comprehensive flood mitigation of Jhelum river. The study covers the entire length of the Jhelum river from Verinag to Uri. The study is currently ongoing and the DPR shall be prepared after final recommendations,” the Minister added—(KNO)
